Choosing the Right Salon Furniture: What to Know Before You Buy

Opening a salon is more than just securing a space and getting your license—how you furnish it sets the tone for your brand, your services, and your client experience. Whether you’re working with a small budget or balling out with investors, your furniture matters.

Here’s what to consider before you hit “add to cart.”

Function Comes First

Before you go for the cute pink chair with the gold legs, ask yourself:

  • Will this withstand daily use?

  • Is it comfortable and ergonomic for both the client and the stylist?

  • Does it meet state regulations (especially shampoo bowls and sanitation stations)?

💡 Pro Tip: Buy furniture that supports posture and mobility—you’ll thank yourself after that 4th silk press in a row.

Know Your Layout

Measure everything before you buy:

  • Total square footage

  • Width between each station (Tennessee requires 50 sq. ft. per stylist)

  • Flow from shampoo to styling to drying areas

  • Space for waiting, retail, and storage

If you’re renting a suite or small storefront, modular furniture and rolling carts can be a lifesaver.

Start With the Essentials

Here’s a basic checklist for every salon setup:

  • Styling chairs (hydraulic preferred)

  • Workstations with mirrors & storage

  • Shampoo bowls with plumbing + reclining chairs

  • Dryer chairs or hooded dryers

  • Storage cabinets for products/towels/tools

  • Waiting area seating

  • Reception desk (optional but ideal)

Once those are locked in, you can level up with extra features like ring lights, decor walls, or add-on stations.

Budget Wisely (But Don’t Go Too Cheap)

It’s tempting to grab the cheapest chair on Amazon, but be careful—it might wobble by month two. Instead:

  • Mix high/low: splurge on your styling chairs, save on breakroom furniture

  • Look for bundled furniture packages to save money

  • Buy gently used equipment from salon resellers or closing salons

  • Get on a payment plan or financing option through salon-specific vendors

Think Like a Brand

Your furniture is a visual representation of your brand. Ask:

  • Do my chairs, mirrors, and layout reflect my vibe (luxury, creative, minimal, etc.)?

  • Does everything look cohesive in color, tone, and finish?

  • Will this space feel inviting and professional to clients?

Keep your color palette consistent—especially if you’re doing branded photos or content inside the salon.

Vendor + Delivery Considerations

Always ask vendors:

  • What is the shipping timeframe?

  • Do they offer assembly or white-glove service?

  • What’s the return policy if something is damaged?

💡 EYH Tip: Plan your install date 2–3 weeks before your opening, just in case delays pop up.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right salon furniture is an investment—not just in your space, but in your client experience and career longevity. Don’t rush it, don’t cut corners, and don’t forget: you can build as you grow.

Start smart, stay flexible, and build a salon that feels like success.
